How To Start A Nursing Blog That Will Keep Readers Interested

The new year brings new resolutions. Is one of yours to do more for you?

If so, then consider starting a nursing blog. It can be an open opportunity for you to write about both the personal side of nursing (like connecting with a…tough patient) and to share your thoughts on the more technical aspects of the job.

We’ll look at some things to consider to start a nursing blog that will keep people interested and engaged.

#1. Platforms

The first thing you need to do is set up a place where your blog will live. There are a number of free and paid platforms that will provide you with the blogging tools you need.

It’s important to investigate places like WordPress and Wix to find one that feels comfortable to you and fits your budget. Don’t be scared away by this part of the process, there are a number of tools that are easy to use for even the most un-tech savvy person.

#2. Schedule

You’re busy. You are a nurse after all. But, just like anything, you have to make time for yourself.

The best way to do this is set something on your calendar for “blogging.” It’s a promise to yourself, and to your readers, that you’ll stick with this grand experiment and keep fresh content coming.

A mistake many bloggers make is posting a lot early on but then slowly tapering their output off. It’s hard enough to gain readers, and even harder to get them back so never stop posting.

#3. Fresh Topics

So, you know where you will post and you’ve set time aside to post, now…what will you write about? Your blog can always evolve but you should start by considering to write about what you’re passionate about.

Maybe you want to share reviews of products. People trust the opinions of nurses and they’d love to hear your thoughts on home medical products like Siemens multistix 10 sg or EpiPens.

You could also consider writing a more introspective blog. One that allows you to share some of your “war stories” with the world. These are great because they create a camaraderie in a “hey, that happened to me too!” type of way.

A more personal blog style can also be cathartic as it presents you with an opportunity to unload some of the stress that a nurse tends to accumulate on any given day.

#4. Benefits

There are a number of benefits to creating, and maintaining, an engaging blog. It’s a good mental workout for you. It connects you to a like-minded community around the world. And it could even bring in a few dollars.

Blogs with high readership numbers can attract the attention of advertisers who might look to put ads on your site or send you products to review. (Remember that whole schedule discussion a few paragraphs ago?)

Next Steps

Now all you have to do is take that first step. Get inspired. Go online and look around at other blogs, see what they say, find out where they live. If you need help, come see us.
